The top with carved front and sides, the panelled ends of the chest are further carved, the whole set upon a carved ogee plinth, stands on bun feet.

Northern Italy, Genoa or Florence, circa 1550

These Renaissance carved Bambocci figures celebrate life and nature and were designs favoured in both Florence and Genoa into the 17th century.

Similar examples of this commode, or chest, were illustrated in a catalogue including the collection of the ''Vincigliata Palace'' in Florence. ''Italian Furniture and Interiors'' by George Layland Hunter, London, Batsford, plates 153 & 164.
