ABOUT THIS EXHIBIT:
The collection of images in this exhibition is a sample of artworks produced for our Healing Hands art project. The Patient and Family Support Services’ Art Therapy program implemented the Healing Hands project in 2023 to encourage staff, patients and their families to focus on what they consider to be “healing”.

Self-care and well-being can sustain us in challenging times. We can do this by surrounding ourselves with activities, environments and thoughts that we find to be restorative and healing – taking time to engage in activities that bring us joy, help us live well, and bring us purpose and meaning. Paying attention to our overall well-being can help us manage stress, improve our overall physical and emotional health, and focus on what makes us happy and comfortable.

With this in mind we decided to launch the Healing Hands community art project by inviting people to think about what “healing” for them is. We asked them to “find time, take a deep breath, grab some color pencils, collaged images, highlighter markers, a pen, and any other materials on hand to embellish the “Healing Hands” image with symbols and colors that they found “healing.” This exhibition is the outcome from this invitation.

We would like to thank all the artists who contributed to this project.

CREATING THE PROJECT:
Self-care is important for both patients and health care professionals. With this in mind, the Patient & Family Support Services team at the U-M Rogel Cancer Center launched this community art project called HEALING HANDS. ThE project honors what patients and staff find personally “healing”. This community project brings a range of images together to represent our collective ideas of what is “healing”, creating an exhibition of shared ideas and images that will benefit us all!
