Friedrich Froebel was the founder of the modern kindergarten in 1838. He designed basic geometric forms (sphere, cube, cylinder, pyramid)and gave them children to play with, believing it would increase their ability to think abstractly. Maria Montessori was influenced by him, and his gifts were eventually sold as children's toys. Upon learning that Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller played with these as children I decided Froebel was the father of modern design and architecture, and created an assymetric geometric module made of a cube and 6 beams not connected at right angles. I used it as a module for building lthe Froebel's Gifts series. extra cubes appear to balance precariously on parts of the structure to suggest the possibility of movement.
