Miyazawa Kenji Dowa Mura (Fairytale Village)
Several pieces of art, including crystal lights like this one, were produced in representation of scenery from Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru (Night on the Milky Way Train), a fairytale written by famed Japanese author and poet, Kenji Miyazawa. Each piece was installed at the Miyazawa Kenji Dowa Mura (Fairytale Village) in Hanamaki, Iwate, Japan, in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of his birth, where they light up the surrounding forest with spectacular refracting light and color. This crystal was specially made as an addition to the set that would be gifted to the city of Hot Springs on the occasion of the Hot Springs Hanamaki Sister City 25th Anniversary. Below is an excerpt from Night on the Milky Way Train, describing what the crystal represents:
Northern Cross
A burst of bright white light flooded the wagon.
Outside, where water flow without voice or form over the bed of the glittering galactic river, as if filled with dew and diamonds and all sorts of splendor, they saw a single island, haloed in dim pale light. Along the plateau summit of the island sat a cross, so brilliant and white that it could have been cast from the clouds of the frozen Arctic, encompassed by an aura of pure gold, standing silently, eternally.
