Xin Song (b.Beijing, China) creates modern paper-cut works using Chinese folk paper technique (originally called Jian-zhi). Through the combination of the traditional and modern, Song’s artwork challenges social taboos, our relationships with the society, and the way we think about ourselves. Song borrows imagery from contemporary magazines, and builds collages that center around narratives such as current affairs, politics, health, beauty, fashion, luxury, environment, nature, technology, and sex. In work of art such as Sex=Taboo? and Lust Caution, topics are paired within singular work. Ultimately, Song’s work is about finding the importance and value in paper materials because in many ways, they mirror the world around us.
Past solo exhibitions include Peekskill Project V (2012), Cutting Dreams (2012), and The World Garden Instillation (2015) in New York.
