Artist: Wei Jia (b. 1957)
Wei Jia (b. 1957, China) creates artwork that is highly influenced by his early exposure to traditional calligraphy, Chinese painting, and poetry. Graduated with a B.F.A from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and a M.F.A. from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Wei Jia currently works and lives between New York and Beijing. The feelings of cultural displacement and questions of dual cultural identities first arose when he moved to the United States in 1985. Through tearing, mounting and painting, Wei Jia measures the influences of Eastern and Western cultures and make collages that incorporate calligraphy, poetry, and abstract techniques.
The work of Wei Jia has been exhibited in major museums such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing), National Museum of Art (Beijing), and Lincoln Center (New York). His work is among public collections of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), Dadu Museum (Beijing), and Brooklyn Museum (New York).
