Artist: Yan Lin (b. 1961)
The work of Yan Lin (b.1961, Beijing, China) unfolds the possibilities of Xuan paper, a kind of paper originated in ancient China. After graduating from The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Lin further pursued studies at L’École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1985. From work on paper to large scale site-specific installations, Lin’s creates artwork that responds to her surrounding environment, and attachments with traditional architectures. In some of her work, the use of black ink draws high contrasts between black and white, dark and light, hard and soft.
Recent solo exhibitions of Lin’s work include: “Lin Yan: Inverted Shadow” at Leo gallery in Shanghai (2018), “Lin Yan : Gateway” at Fou gallery in Brooklyn (2017), and “Lin Yan” at Taipei Eslite gallery (2016). Recent selected group shows are: “Useless Value” at Wanying Art Space, “Crisscrossing East and West: The Remaking of Ink Art in Contemporary East Asia” at Museum of Contemporary Art – Yin Chuan, and “The Dark Matters” at White Rabbit gallery in Sydney.
