  • Artist: Amy Liu (b. 1997)

Amy Liu is a painter, classical soprano and writer based in New York. Liu’s work explores the profound human yearning for a post-traumatic oasis. Her pictorial world is jeweled, dream-like and highly chromatic, with a whisper of uncanniness.

Liu interprets portraiture, landscapes and narratives through the lens of surrealism and classical composition. Her paintings reference 15th century European painting, tapestry and architecture, integrated with Pop Art’s bold lines and colors – juxtaposing vibrant neons with expansive, deep blues and purples. Undulating organic curves contrast with geometric patterning throughout her works, she captures a palpable sense of longing and displacement. The duality of vibrant chroma and subtle sorrow represents the psychological battle between a grateful sense of survival and the haunting echoes from the past. Liu visually journals her ongoing observation of the innately human search for inner peace despite a wounded heart. And her storytelling begins with the chapter where the wounded wanderer found a reason to go on.
