Butterflies never cease to amaze me with their ephemeral wings of vibrant color. They are so constantly in motion that getting a descent photo of one is no small or unsatisfying accomplishment. This Papilio glaucus - “Tiger Swallowtail” appeared on a plant outside at the Dekalb Farmers Market, and I was lucky to snap the photo that inspired both the painting and the words in gold.
“Making the world better one flap of its wings at a time.”
The text is written in my ‘Varabian’ script that I created to imitate the elongated elegance of Arabic. The letters are 23k gold leaf. With additional gold leaf work in the filigree around the fanciful foliage. The calfskin vellum on which everything is painted is sewn with vintage silk thread to gold foil paper. The work is framed in a black gallery frame with plexiglass.
