This Broadbent crane (pre-1930) was a rare piece of industrial maritime heritage located on Spectacle Island, Sydney, which was dismantled and scrapped by the Navy in 2023.
An old Broadbent crane was a fixture on the back wharf at Spectacle Island near Drummoyne on the Parramatta River, Sydney.
The protagonists in the painting are Marine Engineer, Tony Taranto, Ship’s Electrician, Mark 'Marky-the-Sparky' Taylor filling the water bag, and Shipwright, David Glasson in the cabin.
The objective: to lift the load to get readings of the crane’s brakes.
Mark Taylor originally worked on the same Broadbent cranes at the Historic Chatham Dockyards, Kent, England, and is familiar with their electrics & brakes.
Thomas Broadbent & Sons ceased crane manufacture in the 1930s. The heritage crane therefore is a rare piece of industrial maritime heritage. Sadly, the crane was dismantled and removed from Spectacle Island in 2023.
