Dr. Vasundhara (Vasu) Tolia
Brooding by Vasu Tolia Image: I painted this woman in an oversized hat on this beautiful handmade paper pasted on canvas and painted her into the paper, while keeping parts on untouched paper into her hat and dress. Her covered eyes and hidden top half of the face creates a sense of mystery and makes one feel that she’s deeply in thought. Tucked away beneath the expansive brim of a deep navy hat, the subject's face is softly obscured, emphasizing the subtle nuances of light and shadow on her textured skin. The colorful background paper forms an artful contrast to the more realistic rendering of the figure. The meticulous use of angular lines and delicate color gradients reveal the shadow and tonal variation. I wanted this piece to prompt the viewers to ponder the narrative behind the hidden visage to explore identity and anonymity concepts.
