Reflections, curated by ART 300 Critical Theory
- December 02, 2024 - April 28, 2025
ART 300 Critical Theory is pleased to present Reflections, an exhibition of portraits. Featuring artists Zhan Wang, Yasumasa Morimura, Romare Bearden, Robert W. Fichter, and Robert Lazzarini, Reflections brings together works on paper held in the Davidson College collection. These works cultivate compositions of distortion, memory, and appropriation, creating relationships between the artist, subject, and viewer. ART 300 seeks to examine the complexities of these relationships under the theoretical frameworks learnt throughout the course, including psychoanalysis, postcolonialism, sexuality, gender, and race. These open new pathways of understanding by revealing the potential ways in which the artist reflects their sense of self or sense of society while challenging the role of the viewer. These potential paths both agree with and contradict each other through the simultaneous use of theories presented in the selected works. Ultimately, ART 300 hopes to encourage dialogue and debate from the Davidson community in our perception of the portraiture.
