Susan Harbage Page Embodied Cartography in Territorial Disputes

The Anti-Archive of Trauma on the U.S.—Mexico Border

Since 2007, Harbage Page has been making yearly pilgrimages to walk the border between Mexico and the U.S. During many of these visits, she photographed objects left behind by undocumented migrants crossing the border between Matamoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas, United States. First, Page photographed these objects as they were found in the landscape. Later, she re-photographed them at her studio in North Carolina, using colorful backdrops to counter the implication that the objects are “evidence.” Page then archived the objects, giving each one a tag with an individual number.

Harbage Page notes,


“The documentation of the depersonalized objects and photographs gathered over time become a new way to look at the militarization of the border and the ways in which the power of nations plays out in this contested space. In the end, it represents the fact that some people have access and others don’t. The objects I examine all have incomplete and layered narratives attached to them. For example, when a bra is found placed in a tree, it is said that a coyote (person who smuggles people across the U.S.–Mexico border) has placed it there as a sign that a woman has been raped. Other objects, such as lipstick, eye shadow, or a man’s razor, offer stories of self-care, normalcy, or someone trying to ‘fit in’ after they have crossed the Rio Grande on a black inner tube and changed into dry clothes before possibly being taken to a safe house in Brownsville or McAllen, Texas. A found comb or toothbrush is a sure sign that someone has been picked up by the Border Patrol (anything short and hard is seen as a potential weapon). These present-day archeological artifacts reflect incomplete narratives and a history of flight, surveillance, and fear. We usually celebrate our histories through the objects saved and owned by the privileged. The Anti-Archive resists tradition by saving and archiving objects left behind by anonymous immigrants coming into the U.S. from Mexico.”

Desde 2007, Harbage Page ha realizado peregrinaciones anuales para caminar la frontera entre México y EE. UU. En varias de estas visitas, fotografió objetos descartados por migrantes indocumentados que cruzaron la frontera entre Matamoros, México y Brownsville, Tejas, Estados Unidos. Primero, Page fotografió estos objetos tal como los encontró en la tierra. Luego, los fotografió de nuevo en su estudio en Carolina del Norte, empleando fondos coloridos y brillantes para contrarrestar la implicación de que estos objetos suponían “evidencia”. Luego, Page archivó los objetos, asignando a cada objeto una etiqueta con un número individual.

Harbage Page afirma que,


“El proceso de documentar objetos despersonalizados y fotografías recogidas se convirtió en una nueva manera de reflexionar acerca de la militarización de la frontera y las formas en las que el poder de las naciones desarrolla en este disputado espacio. Al final, representa el hecho de que algunas personas tienen acceso y otras no. Todos los objetos que examino contienen múltiples capas de narrativas incompletas dentro de ellos. Por ejemplo, un sostén es encontrado colgando de un árbol, se dice que un coyote (una persona que trafica personas cruzando la frontera EEUU-México) lo ha puesto allí como señal de que una mujer ha sido violada. Otros objetos, como un pintalabios, sombra para los ojos o una maquinilla de afeitar de hombres, ofrecen historias de cuidado personal, normalidad y de alguien intentando ‘asimilar’ tras cruzar el Río Grande en una llanta negra y haberse cambiado de ropa antes de ser posiblemente llevado a un sitio seguro en Brownsville o McAllen, Tejas. Un peine encontrado o un cepillo de dientes es una señal fija de alguien ha sido recogida por la Patrulla Fronteriza (cualquier objeto corto y duro es considerado una posible arma). Estos artefactos arqueológicos de la actualidad reflejan narrativas incompletas y una historia de huida, vigilancia y miedo. Normalmente celebramos nuestras historias a través de los objetos guardados y que pertenecen a aquellos seres privilegiados. El Anti-archivo resiste la tradición al guardar y archivar objetos descartados por migrantes anónimos que entran a EE. UU. desde México.”
