These three photographs epitomize Hellen van Meene’s artistic practice. Using a square format at a somewhat close range, she captures adolescent females in odd and/or awkward poses and actions and of the sitter’s choice. Van Meene describes her work as “photographs of adolescent situations and attitudes, which represent the type of ‘normality’ we don’t usually share with others but keep to ourselves.” Her process depends upon mutual trust and the shared curiosity of the artist and her model.
