Gift of John Andrew MacMahon '95

In No More Q and A from a series of black-and-white ink and collage works, Mark Thomas Gibson explores contemporary American culture through a comic book vernacular, drawing on his multifaceted identity as a Black male, a professor, and an American history enthusiast. The artists take inspiration from President Trump’s inauguration and the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA. This artwork illustrates chaos with numerous male hands grabbing items from different directions. Gibson incorporates death, demons, and violence to critique the current administration and white supremacists. His illustrations convey a clear notion of right and wrong that is emphasized by the work’s binary color palette.
