Sonia Handelman Meyer worked as the secretary of The New York Photo League in the 1940s. With an organizational mission of social imagery and the power of the medium to document history, Meyer was able to simultaneously photograph the poor and immigrant neighborhoods around New York as she worked with the League’s members. With a focus on Harlem and Spanish Harlem, her images give us the spirit and life of those facing hardships during that era.
