Gallery purchase

Ann Hamilton produced this image for the exhibition "the common SENSE," commissioned by the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, where she was a Visiting Fellow. Hamilton utilized her access to several of the university's collections to produce the images in the exhibition. She used a flat-bed scanner to photograph specimens from collection of the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. The resulting images are highly detailed, but with a shallow range of focus. When installed in the gallery, hundreds of images of various animals were printed on thin newsprint, which visitors were invited to touch, tear off the wall, and take home.

This print was produced for Gemini GEL at Joni Moisant Weyl Gallery alongside seven other animal images selected from the "the common SENSE" exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. It is printed on KM04 Surface Mounted Gampi in warm sepia and soft color tones.
