Gift of John Andrew MacMahon '95

From Some Thames (Group J) is one selection within a series of works depicting the Thames River in London, a body of water noted for its paradoxical nature of including various opposing qualities at once. These photographs highlight the different textures, colors, ripples, and tides that, despite their varying elements, make up one ever-flowing river. As with many of her pieces, Horn expresses ideas of fluctuating identity, dynamic appearance, and abstract metaphors about the self. Taken together, Group J of From Some Thames displays four very different sections of the river, which express the fluid nature of the river’s identity and that a sense of self, much like water, is mutable and made of many parts.

Dr. Ann Fox’s “Disability in Literature & Art” class wrote and recorded image descriptions of some of the works in the Van Every/Smith collection. Here two students give a description of the work through their perspectives: Virginia French ’24 and and Ian Brann ’24.
