Beeswax, coffee, rust, oil paint and ashes all fine their way into Patrick Atkinson's richly textured, deeply personal works. Patrick, whose greatest influences in modern painters are Cy Twombly, Atoni Tapies, and Anselm Kiefer, easily admits that he paints for the "therapeutic value of painting... the process." By getting deeply involved in this process, he allows his painting to flow from his subconscious.
"I paint little friends who share my problems. The figures allude to the idea that there exists a very thin line between alienation and solitude... and I want my paintings to be hopeful in that way." Patrick's small suggestion for the subjects of these paintings gives the viewer a starting point for interpretation, but Patrick says that the viewer should interpret his paintings on their own. the interpretation can also be a process for the viewer, revealing to the viewer his or her own subconscious.
