Gift of A. Zachary Smith III ' 63, Glen B. Hardymon, and Henry C. Lomax

Herb Jackson’s signature technique features a lengthy process of layering paint on a canvas and gradually scraping it off. Through this method, the painting transforms and evolves until the final product emerges. Streaks of vibrant color appear on the surface as more and more layers are applied and removed, with visible scratch marks adding a rough texture. Blues for BVE in particular is an exemplar of Jackson’s abstract style, embracing the randomness of layers and the alluring flow of color. The piece was made in memory of William Van Every, namesake of the Van Every Gallery, which is located in the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center (VAC).
