  • Artist: William Van Hettinga (American, 1938-1989)

American painter. Duke University 1963 graduate with an M.A. in English Literature and worked as English professor for ten years. Denizen of the “Beat Generation” and made a few avant-garde films in his youth. Specialized in calligraphic and abstract art while working at the Tradd Street Press in Charleston. Founded free weekly newspaper called Poor William’s Omnibus, which ran from 1985 to 1994. One of the first public victims of AIDS in Charleston.
