Artist: Wilhelm Lehmbruck (German, 1881-1919)
German painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Von Lehmbruck studied in Düsseldorf, Germany at the School of Arts and Crafts and then at the Art Academy. His early works are conservative and inflenced by August Rodin, until he gradually moved away from realism to more psychologically powerful forms. He is known for scultures of elongated, melancholy nudes. During WWI, he worked in a hospital creating works like The Fallen (1915-16) and Seated Youth (1918) that convey the artist's depression. Von Lehmbruck committed suicide in 1919.
