Artist: Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, 1866-1944)
Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky was a law professor at Derpt University before he decided to switch entirely to painting after visiting a French Impressionist exhibit (1895). He attended Anton Azbe's private painting school in Munich (1896), and then switched to Munich Academy of Art (1900), where he studied under Franz Stuck. His early works are mainly landscapes based on color discords. He later moved toward Abstraction, nuanced mixes of color, and geometrically independent elements.
