American printmaker. Born in Oakland, California to New Orlean Creoles. He studied at the University of California before being drafted in the second World War. After his discharge he returned to earn his M.A. in 1947. His early works were abstract and he used serigraphy before switching to intaglio printmaking under the instruction of Anthony Gross at the Slade School of Art in London. His later works evolved into social satire commentary and he has produced several narrative satires. He was named Professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1958 and has exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tale Gallery of Modern Art, MoMA New York, and Portland Art Museum.
