  • Artist: Robert Ernst Marx (German, 1925-2020)

German-American painter, printmaker, sculptor. Works personify the human condition: arrogance of power, exclusivity of institutions of church and state, cycles of abuse, personal fears and insecurities, self-imposed conventions that trap us, etc. Utilizes symbols to visually express forces that control us such as mannequins, masks, and limbs on puppet strings. Collected works found in Brooklyn Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, etc.
