Paul Stephen Benjamin (b. 1966) is a Chicago-born artist with a BFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and an MFA from the Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University. He explores the color and the sound of black as conceptual entry points for dialogue around identity. He draws on aspects of formalism and Minimalism to create his works of varying scale that often rely on the arrangement and repetition of many like components.
One of Benjamin's most notable exhibitions was Black is the Color, displayed in the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, in 2016. He highlighted African-American individuals, culture, and language through television installations and portraits. He is the recipient of the 2017 MOCA GA Working Artist Project, the 2014 Artadia Award, and the Winnie B. Chandler Fellowship, among others.
