Artist: Paul Rotterdam (Austrian, b. 1939)
Austrian painter and illustrator. Born and raised in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Moved to Vienna in 1960 and attended the Akademie der angewandten Kunst and the University of Vienna to study philosophy. First solo exhibition at the Galleria Numero, Florence in 1961 and in Vienna the following year. Was selected to represent Austria at the Fourth biennial of Young Artists in Paris and the Eighth Biennial of International Art in Tokyo. Received PhD in philosophy from the University of Vienna in 1966 and became a Lecturer on Visual Studies at the Visual Arts Center, Harvard University in 1967. Also taught studio classes in drawing. First retrospective as at the De Cordova Museum in 1973, which also took place at the Kunsthalle Freiburg, Germany, the Museum Joanneum in Graz and the Stadtmuseum Leoben, Austria. Married the painter, Rebecca LittleJohn in 1996. Had further retrospective exhibitions at the Leopold Museum, Vienna and many others. Was awarded the medal of honor for science and art from the Republic of Austria. Lectured in Vienna and many other schools.
