  • Artist: Melchior Meier (German, active Italy, ca. 1572–82)

Melchior Meier was a German engraver and draughtsman. Active in Italy in the 16th century (c. 1572-82), Meier worked in the same artist circle as engraver Martino Rota. He subsequently encountered the techniques of Dutch engraver Cornelius Cort, as well as those of Giorgio Ghisi, an engraver from Mantua. Meier's early works suggest that he was involved with the court of the Medici family, prolific patrons who acted as de facto rulers of Florence for most of the 16th century. Indeed, his work is stylistically associated with the Florentine School.
