Artist: Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976)
German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A primary pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist movements, known for his dream-like images. Born near Cologne, Germany. He was drafted and served in WWI. While on the Western Front, he was briefly assigned to map-drawing, which allowed him to continue painting. In 1919, he and several colleagues created the Cologne Dada group, and began to create "collages" which would influence his art for years. Married several times, most notably to Peggy Guggenheim (1942-1946) and Dorothea Tanning (1946-1976). Had one son with his first wife, Luise Straus, who was an artist as well, and his grandchildren are both writers and authors.
