  • Artist: Laurie Simmons (American, b. 1949)

Laurie Simmons is an American photographer and filmmaker. She was born in Long Island, NY and received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA. Simmons's photography often includes staged scenes and inanimate objects with psychological subtexts and nonlinear narratives. Some of her past photographic themes include consumerism, conformity, suburban life, and conventional gender roles. In 2006, Simmons produced her first film, The Music of Regret starring Meryl Streep, which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, NY. Her work is in the permanent collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; and the Hara Museum, Tokyo, Japan, among others.
