  • Artist: Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990)

American artist who's work falls into the categories of street art and fine art. Haring's work originated as graffiti images posted in the subway systems and on the streets of New York City. His aesthetic is cartoonish and bold, and embodies the raw energy and cynical subject matter of Art Brut artists like DuBuffet. His imagery is symbolic in execution, and features a wide range of images such as babies, barking dogs, flying saucers, hearts, and Mickey Mouse. Haring explores themes of exploitation, drug abuse, fears of nuclear war, and matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS. Haring is regarded as a leading figure in the Newe York East Village Art scene in the 1970s and 80s.
