Artist: Jozef Israëls (Dutch, 1824-1911)
Dutch painter. Began painting and drawing at an early age before he studied under painters in Amsterdam, Paris, and Germany. Influenced by German Romantic artists. His paintings of fisherman and their families were inspired by Dutch seaside towns. Thick brushstrokes and strong contrasts between light and dark are evident in his solemn paintings, and as a result, critics often compared his work to that of Rembrandt.
