Artist: Honoré Daumier (French, 1808-1879)
French political cartoonist. Daumier's works focus on 19th century French politics and society. He has also worked in sculpture, painting, and drawing. He did not rise to fame from an artistic void as many aret historians believe, but rather grew up in a family of artists, including his father, grandfather, and godfather. He worked as a bookseller's clerk at the Palais-Royal, one of the busiest spots in Paris, where he witnessed many of the characters who would inspire his cartoons. Later in his life, he created paintings in the Impressionist style that were hardly known during his lifetime.
