Artist: Georges Rouault (French, 1871-1958)
French artist assoicated with Fauvism and developed style alongside Matisse and Derain. Expressionist painter and printmaker who created works based on religious ideals. Some works displayed prostitutes, clowns and performers as degrading to society while other portraits adoring Christ and other spiritual figures. Studied at l'Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and l"Ecole des Beaux Arts and apprenticed under a stain glass artist during this time. Formed a close mentorship with Symbolist Gustave Moreau.
