Artist: Gene Merritt (American, 1936-2015)
American artist. Self-taught and never left his home state, thus his access to the external world came through television. Began drawing 1992. Centered around the celebrity phenomenon, his portraits were drawn from memory or based off of celebrities he had seen in a film. Utilized a ballpoint pen to piece together fragments of the celebrity’s figure like a puzzle. His work is noted in the Collection de l’Art Brut.
