Artist: Birgit Skiold (Swedish/ British, 1923-1982)
Swedish printmaker and modernist artist born in Stockholm, Sweden. Initially studied furniture design at the Tekniska Skolan but later moved to London, where she studied at the Anglo-French Art Centre and met several artists including Francis Bacon and Eduardo Paolozzi. Studied etching and printmaking at the University of Westminster and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Returned to London and set up her own print workshop. Pioneered printmaking as an art and experimented with many different techniques including embossing and collage. Collaborated with James Kirkup on three books. Works reside at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
