  • Artist: Bernard Childs (American, 1910-1985)

American printmaker and painter. Childs was born in Brooklyn, NY, and worked for a significant amount of time in both New York and Paris. He pioneered the markmaking technique of engraving metal plates with power tools. His prints are characterized by layer of violent, chaotic marks and often feautres moments of symbolism. Childs simultaneously worked in the contrasting style of figuration and portrait painting. Childs' formal interests in both realms of his work were line and space, light and color, and the dialogue of contrasting elements.
