Artist: Berenice Abbott (American, 1898-1991)
American photographer. Abbott was a leading figure in photography, known for her black and white photography of New York urban design, producing scientific photos at MIT, photographing celebrities, and travelling through various US cities. She studied sculpture at Grande Chaumiere in Paris and Kuntschule in Berlin (1921-1923) and began her photographic career in Paris with Man Ray as his apprentice. Abbott returned to the US and established her own portrait studio (1926). She developed The New School photography department (1935) where she taught there until 1958. Her of work includes several projects on urban design, scientific photography, and limited edition portfolios up until her death.
