A French Wonder evolved from an old postcard that I found in a second-hand shop. I loved the man’s pose and the riding outfit. Motorcycles, or motor cycles as they were called then, represented a new age in transportation. I wondered what this man felt riding one of these machines. Research indicated that this motor cycle was a 1904 Clement motor cycle made in France. An ad from the time called it “a French wonder” and, thus, the name of this quilt.
I combine a love of history, and a curiosity about people from the past, capturing character in fabric.
Machine appliqué, cotton fabrics, coloured pencil, machine quilted.
