Sierra Slentz x
Sierra Slentz was born in Laguna Beach, CA and transplanted to the desert in her teens. Slentz is a mother, visual artist, and educator, who primarily creates ceramic objects and installations. Trained as a photographer and interdisciplinary artist, she earned her BFA from Sierra Nevada College in 1997 and her MFA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2001. Her work is informed by her interest in geological formations, archeological finds, and her time spent in the desert observing life cycles and urban sprawl. She explores ideas of the persistence of human intervention and mankind's unintentional mark on the landscape. Slentz investigates the seemingly empty landscape of the Mojave Desert and documents her findings through the collection of artifacts and photography. She later makes molds of the found objects and creates ceramic casts that she alters and places back into the desert or uses in her sculptures and installations. She was an artist in resident in 2013 at the P3 Studios and her work is part of the permanent collection at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Slentz currently lives and works in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, and is a full-time instructor at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts.
