Marshall Scheuttle (b. 1984) x
Marshall Scheuttle is a photographer born and based in Buffalo, N.Y. He graduated in 2008 from SUNY Purchase with a BA in Fine Arts. M.F.A University of Hartford
Scheuttle uses large-format 8 x 10 film and travels throughout the U.S. to obtain his images. In “Borderland,” his inaugural 2013
exhibition at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, he juxtaposed photographs with little obvious connection to each other, depriving viewers of wall text or other navigational aids. Buffalo News critic Colin Dabkowski wrote of the resulting effect: “What comes through from viewing the entire body of work is a kind of American optimism that seems to be carried over from an earlier time. You can see it in the facial expressions of many of Scheuttle’s subjects and in the places he’s chosen to photograph. In this trip across the United States, to rodeos, backyards, misty forests and carpeted living rooms, Scheuttle gives us a lyrical snapshot of our country at this exact moment. And, despite our mounting worries over issues domestic and foreign, this body of work seems to vaguely reassure us that things are going to be OK.”
