Gig Depio
Llama head (2014)
Graphite on paper
The llama motif represents Zappos, the online company that was transforming downtown Las Vegas while Depio was creating most of the work in this exhibition. He relates it to his feelings about inevitability of change. Zappos “totally reshaped downtown. Which is partly what this painting is about. I’m not a 100 percent Zappos fan or Tony Hsieh fan, but I realize that it’s something you have to reckon with.”
As he was making plans for A Brief History, he decided that the riot police drawing “was going to be the keystone of it all, I thought. It was going to be its own painting by itself. And then I started imagining stuff [around the figures]. I started adding more and more and I came up with that [Breaking Armistice] and I thought, wow.”
