Transcript of a conversation between Gig Depio, Darren Johnson, and D.K. Sole (December 23rd, 2020)
Gig Depio’s “A Brief History” tackles immigration, politics, and social media, Kristen Peterson. Las Vegas Weekly, November 27 - December 3, 2014.
Online interaction with other artists changed Depio’s attitude toward his work. “It woke me up, that thing with Dave Hickey and the rest of the gang. It’s not even really Dave. It’s knowing a thousand other people that feels like I’m talking to Darren [Johnson, the curator of A Brief History] and the rest of the group at the CAC, but on a much much wider scale. That shaped a lot of the painting too. When there was difficulty in the internal politics here in town, I felt you could brush it aside because we’ve got bigger problems like this, the global art scene, where a lot of people are excluded from art fairs and excluded from exclusive galleries. All of a sudden, the importance of a clique in town disappears.”
