This artwork was included in the exhibition Contemporary Ex-votos: Devotion Beyond Medium at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art from April 19 – November 23, 2024. The work was returned at the end of the exhibition and is not part of the permanent collection.

John Jota Leaños is a Mestizo (Xicano/Italian/Chumash) new media artist using animation, documentary, and performance to focus on the convergence of memory, social space, and decolonization. His animations question the interventions of European epistemologies onto first nation peoples of the Americas and expose the unique manifestations that such cultural clashes create in society today.

“This work is an animated ex-voto painting, praying for the miracle of retribution, redress, and remembrance of the colonial violence that took place in the residential schools of Canada and the United States, as well as the Spanish Mission systems in the Americas. The invocation is for the children and their ancestors to heal from the ongoing traumas of colonization, globalization, and capitalism, and for colonial institutions to begin returning material resources, lands, and accounting for lives lost to the atrocities of residential schools.”

John Jota Leaños es un artista mestizo (xicano/italiano/chumash) que trabaja los medios digitales como la animación, documentales y actuación para centrarse en la convergencia de la memoria, el espacio social y la descolonización. Sus animaciones cuestionan las intervenciones de las epistemologías europeas en los pueblos originarios de las Américas y exponen las manifestaciones que estos choques culturales crean en la sociedad actual.

“Esta obra es una pintura exvoto animada, que busca el milagro de la retribución, la reparación y el recuerdo de la violencia colonial que tuvo lugar en las escuelas residenciales de Canadá y los Estados Unidos, así como en los sistemas de misiones españolas en las Américas. La invocación es para que los niños y sus ancestros se recuperen de los traumas continuos de la colonización, la globalización y el capitalismo, y para que las instituciones coloniales comienzan a devolver los recursos materiales, las tierras y la rendición de cuentas por las vidas perdidas por las atrocidades de las escuelas residenciales”.
