Item Description:
A painting of a Caucasian male with dark brown hair and a collarless white striped shirt facing the viewer against a white background. Two objects protrude from his shoulder blades like wings: a broken branch on his right side and an open envelope with a yellow interior on his left.
Jenna Gribbon is a New York-based painter whose work centers on portraiture and the complex emotions of the people being depicted. She prefers to paint people close to her. When describing her relationship with her fiancée, the musician Mackenzie Scott, she jokingly remarked that it was useful to have your muse always available for observation because any candid moment could become a picture. Referring to her recent paintings (not on view here), which revolve around both Scott and her son, she has said that: “My work is really concerned with intimacy and all the implications of that, and what we think of as other people’s intimacy and misconceptions about that.”
