Gig Depio
Nestler Settler (2016)
Oil on panel

The "Brief History" exhibition encouraged Depio to continue painting. He had seen that his new vocabulary of motifs and ideas could succeed. In this 2016 canvas, the building materials of his earlier works have become the Birds Nest, the stadium the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei designed for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Depio is thinking about the flow of objects between China and the United States and linking it back to the themes he was illustrating in 2014. "The bird is a symbol for migrants, for a transfer or a movement of people. In 'Requiem for the Outsiders' you see ships coming in. There's an exchange of goods or an exchange of people. An exchange of cultures. These paintings are symbols of these crossroads."
