Most of the photographs in Kathleen Nathan’s Inside Brooklyn series are in color. By choosing black and white for Inside Brooklyn "Evening," she emphasizes the shadowy contrasts of pattern and shape in the fore- and background of the scenery outside the window. Nathan, a New York state native who graduated from UNLV with a MFA in 1991, chose her window as a site for photography after moving to New York City in 2011. “I was really disoriented by my new surroundings,” she says. Watching the city from her apartment “helped me to get my bearings and my location.” The calm apartment enabled her to establish a distance between herself and the urgency of the streets. The series as a whole prioritizes moments of contemplation and solitude, sometimes literalising the idea of “focus” with the inclusion of glass prisms. (DKS)
