We believe everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that makes space for us all.
MessageElena García-Brokaw’s photography
installation is meant to be a simulacrum
of the recovery process. Consisting
of red carnations and about 200
photographs of varying sizes and in
progressive stages of development,
(from) his Eyes represents the devotional
attention of recovering, maintaining,
and interpreting family artifacts. The
images were selected from a collection
of almost 2000 photographs taken
by the artist’s father, Ramiro García, a
Guatemalan artist and leftist activist
who was murdered by the Guatemalan
security forces in 1980. Spanning a
brief period from 1978 to the year of
his death, they hint at the complexity
of thriving in a time of war. As an artist,
García-Brokaw interacts with the memory
of her father by creating projects in
collaboration with the keepsakes that
were left behind after his assassination.
