We believe everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that makes space for us all.
MessageZully Mejía employs her art practice
to help her assimilate, structure and
integrate experiences. To create these
paintings she drew imagery from family
photographs of herself as a child in
Peru, using the material reality of the
past as a tool to ground herself as
she looked for healing in the present.
Currently based in the UK, she is
physically separated from her mother,
who has lived in Las Vegas since 2005.
The UK's strict visa program has made
it difficult for mother and daughter to
visit one another easily. The process
of creating artworks like these helps
Mejía to find strength in the connections
between the stresses of her personal
circumstances and the large-scale
complexities of heritage and immigration.
Zully Mejía emplea su práctica artística
para ayudarla a asimilar, estructurar e
integrar experiencias.
