Artist: Philip Argent (British, b. 1962)
Born and raised in the UK, Argent graduated from UNLV with an MFA in 1994, moved to Los Angeles, and went on to establish a reputation as a postmodern abstract artist whose “subtly toxic paintings” are “the visual equivalent of computer viruses that scramble files,” according to David Pagel in the Los Angeles Times. The written summary that accompanied his 2009 show, Restless Zoom, referred to him as an artist who was interested in “ideas” that “travel less like the linearity of page turning and more like the frenetic window popping of web browsing […] Argent’s abstractions cite these aesthetics within the lexicon of painting.”
